Do you ever dine alone in the Whole Foods Cafe, and see other people dining alone, and wish that you had an easy way to strike up a conversation?

The brand new concept of the Twifties Table gives guests a reason and excuse to have the company of new friends and companions over their meal. Twifties, in case you haven't heard yet, are the fun people around age 50 and up. Twifties Table is scheduled for lunch and dinnertime in the Whole Foods Market in Westport, CT on January 20. Twifties Table will be at Whole Foods in Darien, CT on January 23. 2012.

Twifties Founder Lauren Traub Teton, of Westchester County New York realized that the biggest birth years of the Baby Boom have yielded adults who are now 50 to 55 years old. Despite the noise about the oldest Boomers turning 65 this year, there are actually 4 million more people in the younger half of the Boom Years.

Ms. Teton feels that the marketplace does not adequately acknowledge the needs of Baby Boomers, especially the younger ones."There's wasn't even a name for this group before. I certainly don't respond to being called a "Senior Citizen" laughs Ms. Teton, a youthful age 55 who loves snowboarding." So as a professional product namer with her company Name One! NY she created the moniker Twifties, because "fifty is the new twenty. Twenty, fifty, TWIFTY! Twifties encompasses people of any age who identify with fun. "Twifties are the bullseye of the target of consumers and spenders over 50 says Teton. "When was the last time you saw an ad for skis with a 50+ year old skier pictured? Yet there are plenty out there and they spend lots of money!"

Loneliness and social isolation are the secret darkside of growing older that Ms. Teton wants to bring to light and combat. "People want company at a meal and for activities. Single or married, Twifties want like-minded people and new friends in their lives to share experiences with, and their families are not always the whole answer."

Thus the Twifties Table was created as a simple solution. Lauren Traub Teton will be at the Twifties Tables in Westport and Darien CT on two days in January and encourages people who like fun or want more fun in their lives to pick up their lunch in the Prepared Foods department and look for the designated Twifties Table in the Cafe. "It's a perfect solution." No checks to divvy, no conforming to someone else's schedule or food choices. Pick up what you want from the high quality healthy and appealing hot and cold bars, and come and go as you please."

Music Festival Season is in full swing and lasts through January!! If you don't believe it check out the new MusicFestCalendar.com which lists nearly 200 festivals this season, just counting those east of the Mississipi River!

The next two festivals I will be attending are Evolvefest in Vernon, NJ starting September 2, and Catstill Chill in Hancock NY starting September 9. The ride northwest on Route 17 to Delaware County toward Hancock has some of the most beautiful natural scenery anywhere. Criss crossing over trout streams and viewing vistas of tree covered hills as the highway gently rises and falls will get you in chill mode before you even arrive.

This is the second Catskill Chill Fest, and having attended other festivals at this spot, I can vouch for the fact that it is truly one of the best venues around. The magic vibe of the French Woods Summer Camp location rivals the energy vortex of the Mariahville, NY location of past Gathering of the Vibes, and Camp Bisco. But even better, the Catskill Chill Music Festival is located on a beautiful pond. Put this one on your calendar!! There's even a direct bus from NYC,

Catskill Chill Music Festival

The second annual Catskill Chill Music, Camping and Arts Festival returns to scenic Camp Minglewood in Hancock, NY. By popular demand this year’s festival is extended to three days following the success of last year’s two day event and takes place Friday, September 9 through Sunday, September 11. Camp Minglewood rests on a picturesque, lakeside and tree-lined 200 acres in the western Catskills and is just 140 miles from New York City.

Thirty-five musical acts, spanning multiple genres from jam band to funk to roots to DJ’s are scheduled to perform on three stages and include Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann and 7 Walkers, Umphrey’s McGee, Conspirator, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Particle, JGB with Melvin Seals, BoomBox, John Brown’s Body, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Pimps of Joytime, Zach Deputy, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, The Heavy Pets, Headtronics, DJ Logic and many more.

Catskill Chill is an all-ages event that features an intimate setting which affords guests the opportunity to see their favorite artists perform up close. Festival attendees will also be treated to the “Club Chill” DJ stage, morning yoga classes, fire show by SOFP, food vendors, clothing and craft vendors, bonfire drum circle, open mic stage, free parking and free camping with paid admission. Featured musical performances will begin Friday afternoon at 2:30PM and conclude early Monday morning by 3AM. Guests are permitted to camp through Monday at noon.

Tickets for Catskill Chill are available as follows: Full Weekend Pass with onsite camping and parking included is $105 per ticket. Two Day Pass for Saturday and Sunday with onsite camping and parking included is $90 per ticket. Children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by a parent. RV Parking Pass is $40 and does not include festival admission. Onsite cabin rentals featuring showers and electric are now sold out. Tickets purchased in advance provide a discounted rate for festival goers. Any remaining tickets will be made available for purchase at the gate for an additional twenty dollars. All advance tickets may be purchased at www.catskillchill.com.

A Round Trip Bus Pass is available to those traveling from New York City and in need of transportation. The bus boards at 9:30AM at Bryant Park and departs for Catskill Chill at 10AM sharp on Friday, September 9 and returns on Monday, September 12, departing Catskill Chill at noon. All passengers are advised to be on time for scheduled departures. The Round Trip Bus Pass cost is $50 and does not include festival entry. Bryant Park is located behind the NY Public Library in Manhattan between 40th and 42nd Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenue.

"Nine Lives of a Marriage" moves along quickly and reads like a juicy novel. The story starts in Budapest, Hungary in 1945 and we learn of the ambitious success of Eva Duke and her secretarial service. Dr. George Friedlander arrives with a bang and changes the course of young Eva's life. She falls in love with the charismatic chemist and abandons her fiance who is away in a work camp. Back story tells of the horrors of the work and concentraion camps. Next stop Italy for good times after the war. The couple marries, and reluctantly leaves their beloved adopted home of Italy for a last chance at finding a better life in America when they are offered visas for the 3rd and final time.

In the United States, the young couple assimilates beautifully as they have in Italy. George has always had an eye for women, and Sadie, the flirtatious and curvy real estate agent who works with him on investment properties, becomes a fixture in their household and their lives. The story is woven rich in details, and curiously dispassionately, except for the early love affair with George and the parts back in Hungary when Eva goes to visit her sick mother and falls back into the arms of her old beau, Dan.

This book is a very entertaining read, and is formatted in a handy size for those of us who still read books made of paper. It is a great beach or travel read. Just remember to have another book lined up because you will finish it fast and be craving another good book afterwards!

The only “givens” that I’ve found at GOTV are that every day, unexpected and wonderful things will happen, and every year, at the end of Vibes, I say “THAT was the best year EVER! This year is no exception as the 16th annual Gathering of the Vibes happened at Seaside Park and for miles around it, in Bridgeport, CT.

Changes of note for the 2011 version were: the fantabulous addition of the 85 foot high Ferris Wheel, managed by George Marrena of Marrena Amusement. Its colors lent an ever changing psychedelic signature to the skyline over the water, and brought glee to many, as riders and viewers. This year there was no golf cart taxi service, in past years a boon to tired fest-goers who needed to get to the campground way over in West Beach, a mile or more away from the main area and the site of Friday and Saturday Silent Disco on the beach from 1 am to 4 am.

WPKN supplied the invaluable service of piping in the music through listener's radios, a godsend to be able to hear some of the show sitting in a shady campsite instead of a baking field or even at home through waves or web.

Dark Star Orchestra gave their ALL in the Friday night main show, sweaty as it was. They played an elective set, that means it was not one of their usual copies of a Dead show, and they put everything they had into it. The late show at the Green Vibes stage by Big Gigantic had the crowd going WILD on the dance floor and was shall we say, not a way to wind down before bedtime, hee hee.

On Saturday, moe played a 30 minute groovy jam of “Rebubula, So Long, Rebubula” with dancing parts and resting parts toward the end. Inflated pandas and beach balls flew through the air as the sun set slowly. Jane’s Addiction hinted at the showtime extravaganza that was to come – it was the only act that had a curtain drawn, and as the band broke into “Whores” the black curtain unfurled from the top down and exposed the 10-ring circus from the mind of Perry Farrell including black plastic clad women girls flailing on rope from the ceiling in time to the music (one is Etty Lau Farrell, Perry's wife and mother of their 2 kids) and 30-foot cheesecake posters of discretely naked women.

All of that almost paled in comparison to watching the magnetic man himself. Perry’s moves on stage will make anyone seem like a good photographer, because he knows exactly what to do. A swee-eet moment was when a giant beach ball landed at him onstage, and he flipped the mini-fridge sized ball onto his finger tip and gave it a spin, easy as a 20-year Harlem Globetrotter. Many people we spoke to tired of his glorification of alcohol and steady requests to deliver joints to the stage, but…whatever. The darkness is part of their schtick. The show ran hot and cold IMHO, with “Caught Stealing” and “Jane” highpoints to the less fervid fans of the group.

Perpetual Groove’s late night show at the Green Vibes stage was not what I was expecting. I remember seeing them somewhere, maybe at Vibes, and it was a dance party. Saturday night less so. The Silent Disco went on til 4 a.m. down at West Beach, a long walk from the Ferris Wheel. The disco was right on the beach, in the dark, with headphones and music supplied. People grooved to the outwardly silent tunes playing in and around their heads on the sandance floor, but no music was audible!

Sunday, a mini rain shower happened simultaneously with the sun shining. Ken Hays, whatever strings you pulled on that one, Bravo! We were there for the serious lightning storm 2 years ago during Moe that shut the show down, and up at Mariahville the night Ratdog’s music, and thunder and pouring rain competed in Mother Nature’s Superbowl Stadium. This is the first Vibes we can remember in 6 years that remained dry, though it was a bit toasty all week.

Sunday surprised on other fronts. The “wind down” afternoon shows were actually uppers. School of Rock All Stars in the new School of Rock tent, neatly by the kid’s area, had some of the finest and certainly the freshest, youngest new talent we saw all week. When the tempos went into instant overdrive on the 2 cover songs we filmed, and the audience started moshing, we had to COLWG …that’s chuckle out loud with glee! See the performance and interview with one of our favorite School of Rock bands from Sunday here.

Roving back over to catch the end of the John Butler Trio, the thinning and comfortably-sized audience was engaged in some serious dance action, and we’ve got the ecstatic looking dancer’s on film for you. It was nice to be around the very happy vibe the band created. And what a good looking crowd it was too!

Once again, this mammoth music festival, that started from a small party year’s ago, has prevailed. It was…the bestVibes ever! Party on Garth!

to Wachusett Mountain

Event Highlights Active Lifestyle Among Baby Boomers

Fifty skiers and snowboarders over the age of 50 converged on Wachusett Mountain for the Twifties Winter Games, March 2, to show the world that the Baby Boomer generation can and does follow an active, fun-filled lifestyle.

“Typically we’ve seen 25 to 30 participants in the Senior Winter Games,” said Carl Fetteroll, games coordinator, Massachusetts Senior Games. “This year we had 50. Two things are different. This is the first time we’ve had a title sponsor, Twifties, and we’ve settled on an early March date for the event.”

“We were thrilled with the turnout this year, double what we expected from last year,” said Teton. Having Twifties as a title sponsor gave the event more credence and helped get the word out to a larger audience, she said.

The Massachusetts Senior Winter Games have taken place at Wachusett Mountain, Princeton, MA, for 18 years usually in January or February. This year the event was scheduled for the first Wednesday in March, a date the games will hold for years to come.

Twifty is a word to describe the active subset of Baby Boomers who continue to carry out an active lifestyle, according to Twifties founder and advocate Lauren Traub Teton, herself an accomplished snowboarder, snowsports journalist, and videographer.

Massachusetts Senior Games is a volunteer organization with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts as its presenting sponsor. The group provides competitions in 30 different sports for men and women over the age of 50. Massachusetts Senior Games is based at Springfield College where Fetteroll teaches math.

The skiers and snowboarders participated in the day’s two races run on Wachusett’s NASTAR course. Twifties and Wachusett Mountain supplied participants with discounted lunch vouchers.

“Ski and snowboard racers are a special breed of Super Twifties,” said Teton. “They head out each winter week in the darkness and ice to compete in their race leagues. I see now, they're hooked! I felt that feeling on the Super G course myself at the Twifties Winter Games.”

Of the 50 racers at the Twifties Winter Games, six were over 80, 10 in the 70 to 79 category, 18 were 60 to 69 and 16 in the 50 to 59 age bracket.

No one had a better time on the slopes of Wachusett than Nancy Howe, who at 82 was the eldest woman racing in the Twifties Senior Games.

“I live in Rutland, right next door, so Wachusett is my home mountain,” said Howe. This season, she skied every day from when Wachusett opened on Nov. 28 through the end of January. “Then the knees began bothering me, so now I’m only racing two nights a week.”

She returned to skiing when she was 77 because she found she had idle time and wanted to keep fit in the winter. The transition to ski racing came quickly. “Skiing was getting boring,” said Howe, who as a young woman raced with Andrea Mead Lawrence, a three-time Olympic skier who won two gold medals in the 1952 Olympics.

“This is fun,” said Sandy Bell, of Sudbury, MA, as she waited near the starting gate for her turn to race. “It’s nice to see people at 82 out here. She’s really an inspiration. Twifties is a great idea. It addresses an area that is neglected.”

Also waiting for her race number to be called was Edith McNamara, of Sterling, MA, a friend of Bell’s. “This is great. Twifties is a great concept. Why not have something for us?”

According to Teton, Twifties are fun people around age 50 and up. The word Twifty is derived from “fifty is the new twenty. Twenty, Fifty, Twifty!” and was created by Teton, a professional product namer.

“The business world is starting to realize they had better design and market products for us,” said Teton, who cited a recent feature on CBSNews.com titled, “The new target demographic: Baby Boomers. As the Baby Boom generation ages, companies explore ways to attract some of their $3.4 trillion annual buying power.”

“But if they're targeting at the older end of the Boom, they are missing the boat because the younger end, Cohort #2 as it is sometimes called, is the biggest buying demographic in the U.S.,” said Teton.

Twifties Winter Games at Wachusett March 2. 2011

Skiers and snowboarders age 50 and up are invited to come out to Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, MA on Wednesday, March 2 for downhill fun in the Twifties Winter Games. Three events will be held. There are Super G, and Dual Giant Slalom races starting at 9:30 a.m. Competitors will be matched by age in 5 year increments. For those less competitive, a Twifties Ride will be held at 2 pm, skiing and snowboarding for fun with a group of age and activity peers. Registration for the races is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the Granite Room. and the registration fee is $55 which includes a lift ticket or $30 for season pass holders. Wachusett says "Bring along someone who has never skied with us before and we'll take $10 off your registration." The rain date is Wednesday, March 9.

Lunch and an award ceremony will be held after the races conclude and those in the races and those going for the Twifties Ride are invited to attend. Lunch vouchers worth $10 will be available for sale at $8 each The Twifties Winter Games are part of the Massachusetts Senior Olympics. Active events for adults is what the newly debuted TwiftiesCalendar.com is all about. Twifties are the fun people in their late 40s, and up. Twifties can sign up on the site for the email party list and be notified of upcoming events.

October 17, Sunday, will be the Catamount Adventure Party for Twifties. All (over age 8) are invited to come to Catamount Resort in the Berkshire Mountains, Hillsdale, NY, on the Massachusetts/NY line. The group will meet to spend a few hours adventuring on the rope courses and zip lines. An optional box lunch will be served at a discounted price of $5 in the tavern afterwards. The rope course will be $41 for ages 12+, $30 for ages 11-12 and $24 for ages 8-9.

Meet at 10:45 at the Adventure Desk in the main lodge. If there is light rain the event will happen. Heavy rain postpones to the following Sunday, Oct. 24. Coming in February is the Twifties Trip to Nosara, Costa Rica, for sun, surf, dancing, and yoga. Unlike other travel groups people travel in their own style with Twifties. Come down when and how you like, and stay where you like. Twifties will get together daily for an activity. Then travelers can spend time at their own speed, in activities with new Twifties activity companions, alone, or with their own travel companions. The idea is that the Twifties activities unfold organically.

“An open format is the way I like to travel and it works great, so I want to bring this wisdom to our Twifties Activities,” says Twifties founder Lauren Traub Teton. “Twifties activities are for independent travelers who might have gone to these places anyway, but just needed a little encouragement or some people to do things with to seal the deal.”

A Twifties day hike of the Appalachian Trail in Vernon, NJ was the latest Twifties event. It was a Twifties “Instant Event” that came up with very little planning, and those who knew about it and were available participated. A small group had a fantastic time hiking on a beautiful day, with even a little bit of unexpected adventure when a hiker from the group overshot the turnoff for the overlook and continued down the trail. A search party went after her and all were reunited. Beth Nolan, of BN Yoga led the group in some impromptu “Yoga Anywhere” in the woods and all descended the Wawayanda Mountain range stretched, refreshed, and grounded after the hike.

Twifties.TV has over 50 entertaining videos of what Twifties do for fun, made by Ms. Teton. “We reached the thrilling milestone of 100,000 viewers for our videos last week!” says Ms. Teton. Our viewers solidly prove our demographic, with 50% over age 45 and 70% over age 35. 75% of our viewers watched the Oasis of the Seas preview videos, so it makes sense to assume they are an affluent market with disposal income.”

“The point of the Twifties movement is for the fun people close to 50 and up to regain their power and know that it’s ok, even therapeutic to have fun. Why are only 5% of advertising dollars directed at the group that controls over half of consumer spending? Apparently we are invisible. My mission is to make the aspirational lifestyle of a vibrant group of happy people show up on the radar screen, for the betterment of all,” says Ms. Teton.

Have you always wanted to do a rope course and zipline adventure? Maybe you just needed a reason to come, and some new friends to explore with? Twifties, the FUN people in their late 40s and UP are having a day out at the Catamount Adventure Park on October 17. Meet other fun people like yourself. Bring your mate, date, friends, kids, (over age 8) or come on your own and meet us!

Catamount Adventure Park is a self-guided tour, so you can go at your own pace, with the people you want to be with. (Us!)

With nine courses of varying difficulties you are challenged to cross bridges, climb ladders, obstacles and zip lines. Most people that lead an active lifestyle and are in good health should not have any difficulty in completing many of the ropes courses. You are able to proceed at a pace that is comfortable to you, and you can exit the course at many locations. You are also welcome to leave the ropes course and take a break. Unlike the yellow and green courses, the black courses are very challenging.

What should I wear and bring?
Wear sneakers, pants or shorts but not short-shorts, t-shirts but not sleeveless, long sleeve t or light fleece, hair tie if your hair is long. Small cameras are allowed but should not be used while climbing and should be kept in a small waist pack. No big cameras on the course.

I'm headed to the Evolvefest.org Music and Yoga Festival in Vernon, NJ, tomorrow.

I'm just back from Evolvefest. It was INCREDIBLE! Met great vibration people and heard awesome music all day and all night, in addition to spending hours on my yoga mat in a quiet and sacred spot with wonderful teachers!! I am breathing and flowing so much better after the Heart Tantra workshop. I am stretched out after Thai massage. I am vibrating at a high frequency after Gong Vibration Therapy. I am amused after sitting in a swinging chair where the Universe provided me Planter's Party Mix and then an instant spontaneous party with wonderful brand new friends. And at hearing an impromptu version of a Michael Jackson song karaokied by a member of one of the featured bands, when he wasn't onstage.
And love and light are flowing through me. Thanks Dave!!

New word “Twifties” gaining ground in English Language. Old is the new Young or
Is it really true that nobody older than 32 uses Paypal?

The new word “Twifties” meaning “fun people around age 50 and up” is gaining traction in the English language and on the internet. So says wordsmith and inventor Lauren Traub Teton, who created the word Twifties in 2008. “One reason we need this word is because I looked at the different photos representing customers and vendors on Paypal.com today, and didn’t see anyone over age 32! Is it really true that nobody older uses Paypal? Of course not. Baby Boomers and the lively Twifties subset of Boomers are just invisible to marketers! We have money to spend and time to do things, and we love to have fun. Yet the only people I see in ads who are my age are selling hair color and wrinkle creams and drugs for erectile dysfunction. Without a name, this group has no clout.”

The word Twifties was defined in MORE Magazine (hard copy) in May 2010, and accepted into online resources UrbanDictionary.com and Wordnik.com in August 2010. Twifties are the fun people around age 50 and up. The derivation of the word is "Fifty is the new Twenty. Twenty, Fifty, ...Twifty." Teton felt the need to create this word because the Twifty demographic is a group often wrongly ignored by marketers of fun products, who she says stick to the old model of capturing the 18 to 34 year old age group. Of the 74 million Baby Boomers, possibly one third to one half of them are Twifties" estimates Teton. By having a name for the group, we are defining it and giving Twifties a way to gather and find others who are living vibrantly and who share similar interests, whatever they may be” says Teton.

'Baby Boomers' was a great moniker, and it stuck, and described an age group in just two words, for the last 40 years. But it's tired now, and doesn't target the exact group I'm thinking of" says Teton. We should share our joy and knowledge in reaching this age and in fine-tuning the art of being healthy and having fun in our lives."

Being around 50 and up these days is far different than it was even 20 years ago. Teton explains that "the biggest birth years of the Baby Boom spawned people who are now 48 to 52 years old, and they are not sitting in rocking chairs on porches. Instead they are the bulls-eye of the target of consumers, controlling huge amounts of discretionary spending, and taking the time to enjoy recreation and fun, despite all the bad economic news. We should be recognized as an extremely valuable target market, have products designed that cater specifically to us, be marketed to in a respectful way, and see people like us in the ads for these products" says Teton.

Another example she gives is in the snow sports world. According to SIA, in 2007 there were 1.8 million skiers and almost 200,000 snowboarders over age 44. Snow sports gear is an extremely competitive market, and targeting this age group could be a goldmine and really set a company apart. “Yet Skiingmag.com doesn’t even allow subscribers to enter a birth year earlier than 1964” when registering on their website, chuckles Teton.

However it’s not just about spending money. Twifties are at a point in life where they know how to follow their passions and enjoy life without necessarily spending a lot of money. The Twifties Lifestyle is an attitude of living the good life, having friends and activity companions to do things with, and being self-actualized about good health, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Twifties is about a positive and rewarding lifestyle through attitude, and at all income levels and as such will be representing a portfolio of products that represent the Twifties lifestyle. The Twifties want to look good, and feel good, by taking care of themselves, and they want to share what works for themselves and find out what is working for others says Teton.

Twifties movement is a "grassroots movement of the people" and Teton plans parties, events, and travel for Twifties who she describes as independent thinkers, discriminating consumers, and adventurers. These people want to meet in real life, and enjoy finding activity companions with similar interests. It’ social networking OFFline in the real world, springboarding off the internet. Lauren Traub Teton is in discussion with several major social networking websites about building a gathering place for this group online where members can share what works and find people like themselves for healthy and fun pursuits.

Twifties Winter Games and Fashion February 23 at Ski Sundown for Sportsters Age 50 and Up

Racing on snow for people age 50 and up happens February 23 at Ski Sundown resort in New Hartford, CT. Race, have fun, and model your best snow gear of all time.

New Hartford, CT, February 16, 2010 --Ski Sundown resort in New Hartford, CT is the hot spot on Tuesday, February 23 when the Twifties Winter Games will be held for older snowsports enthusiasts. Winter sports enthusiasts who are age 50 or better by 12/31/2010 at all levels of skill are invited to compete. Events at the games are racing in the Giant Slalom and Downhill for skiers and snowboarders. Cross Country and Snow Shoe Races with snow shoes provided round out the race roster. The price is $35 to compete. The Connecticut Ski Council is organizing the event with Ski Sundown. A hot lunch is offered during the award ceremonies for $22 subject to availability.

This year “Twifties” is the title sponsor. Twifties are the fun people around and above age 50. Who is the most important person in your life?

When Beyonce Knowles was asked this question on 60 Minutes last night, her answer surprised me. She replied "I guess I am." Brava Beyonce for your focus and candor! And that policy seems to really be working for her. Last year she earned around $80 million and employed hundreds of people. She brought joy and light and beauty and fun to millions of her fans on tour and through recordings. She is living the life she always wanted and envisioned from the time she was a child.

Yet many of us think that society subtly discourages allowing ourselves to be the focus of our lives. Words like "selfish" and "self-centered" may be directed to people who focus on their lives first. "Selfless" shows up as a synonym for "unselfish" in the dictionary, but scratch below the surface and you will find that people who can help others must be sound and centered first."Selfless" is a misnomer and a wrong concept. If you are wanting and in need you don't have much to give others.

We should all follow Beyonce's beautiful lead and be the most important persons in our life.Not being the most important person in your life has down sides. Of course parents of small children and guardians of people who need help would do well to fill up their glass and then share. The airlines tell you to put on your own oxygen mask first. You can't help others if you are not thriving. Not being the center of your life is like driving down the highway at 65 mph while eating, talking, and shaving! It is safer and more beneficial to all if you focus on the task of driving, or the task of running your life.

If people strive to thrive in their own lives first, they will have plenty of goodness and abundance to share with others. Beyonce is a wonderful role model.

Zestra vs. Astroglide

Zestra is an oily product, and is scented. Astroglide seems to be more water-based and is unscented, disappearing when it dries, instead of leaving a residue.

Hot Tuna Review, Ridgefield Playhouse, November 29, 2009

What an awesome show! From the getgo, the three musicians were sitting onstage ready to go at 8:05 pm and played through til after 11, with one intermission. It seemed like they were chomping at the bit to play because they have such a darned good time! Barry Mitterhof was the third musician for this acoustic evening. He plays with Jorma a lot and has been touring with the Tuna, namely Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady since 2004. Did you know that Jorma and Jack have been playing together since they were teens (shout out to Charismatic Megafauna) And of course they both played with the Jefferson Airplane. That factoid is thrown in for my younger readers.

The music was heavenly, as if channeled to them by angels. I usually slip out of the Ridgefield Playhouse before the encore to beat the traffic (though there's never much of a wait at this wonderful intimate local venue.) Tonight I stayed through 'til the end, and even got a front row seat for the last song, a polka where Jorma says his (now ex) girlfriend called him "Old Santy Clause." Called "Just Because." Watching them communicate telepathically as one can do up close added a whole new dimension to the show. No video from me tonight, I am taking a night off. Jorma always keeps it fresh with some new material, but played the one song I HAD to hear - "Genesis." Also an extended jam on "Good Shepherd." I elect this band as Super Twifties! They look like they're really having fun when they play, and they've gotten better over time. They stand as an inspiring example to Twifties everywhere - the FUN people!!

Computer in the Repair Shop - Hooray!

It is August. My computer is away for vacation, in the shop waiting for a new fan. It has been sounding like a small motorboat.

Not having an easy way to check my email has been a blessing!
I have broken the addiction.
I am not missing email, in fact I am SO relieved to be forced to take a break.

After work I am enjoying the steamy outdoors. And there is LESS work since I am not tied to email! I am relaxing and catching up on my snowboard magazines on the deck. Seeing friends, going to the beach. I still don't have a portable enslavement, uh, I mean email device, and don't plan to. If you have business or social reason to reach me, please phone.

I have written about our enslavement to technology before. Read "Slaves to Electronics? Take Time to Think." that I wrote last July here.

Without noticing it, all of our free time has turned into "tech time." People get together with their friends then waste that precious time texting or phoning with other people instead of giving attention to the ones in the room. It is rude. It is compulsive.

High tech communication is eating away at our lives.
Reading and answering email has become a job. I didn't apply for that job, and I'm not getting paid for most of it. R U?

Our email load is not likely to get lighter in the future without our own intervention. We feel obligated to check email in case a business opportunity or friend wants to reach us. Email is not even 100% reliable.

Let's agree to call each other instead when it's important.
That way email can end up lower on the priority list and important things on our list can get done. And we can devote some time to thinking and allowing new ideas to enter our minds. The quiet mind invite new ideas in.

And remember, less tech time means more time to have FUN, relaxation, and enjoyment. That's what Twifties are all about.

August 6, 2009 at the Regina A. Quick Center was the summer night for a three band flashback to the early rock music of the 1960s. This was a fund-raiser for WPKN Radio with tickets priced appropriately at $66. And the second stop of a quick August 18-stop tour called "California '66 Revue" that was to include Love, and Sky Saxon, who unfortunately died on the same day as Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. The Electric Prunes were on the tour, but are now only playing this one show. I guess all you need (or will get) is Love on this tour. The website www.california66revue.com/ says another band will be added to the tour.

Blues Magoos opened the show and original member Peppy Castro quipped onstage that one of their next gigs will be their fifth one in 42 years for this 2-hit wonder band. He explained how one of their early hits "Pipe Dream" was considered "too psychedelic" for mainstream radio and was pulled from the airwaves during it's climb up the charts back when he was 17. Original band member Ralph Scala was on keyboards, and Peppy's son Jesse played drums. The band sounded amazingly tight and riffed into some subtle techno beats. Castro has kept busy all these years writing songs for the likes of Cher, and playing in the bands Balance and currently Barnaby Bye. Three members of the audience danced like crazy. The rest wanted to but apparently dared not leave their seats. Pig Light Show of Fillmore fame added delicious lighting effects for the trip. Many Twifties, that is the fun people around and over 50 were in evidence, some resplendent in period garb. The audience was 2 to 1 male to female.

Love, the band played a profound set of their seminal music, much of it written by the late band founder Arthur Lee, who was way ahead of his time. Which can be difficult. The original band members are gone except Johnny Echols, and the band Baby Lemondade has been taking their place and toured with founder Arthur Lee from 1993 to 2005. The lead singer does a credible sound-alike for Arthur Lee's smooth vocals. Who knew that their set opener and hit "My Little Red Book" was a Burt Bacharach song that was first recorded by Manfred Mann for the film "What's New, Pussycat?"

A slideshow homage to the recently deceased musician Sky Saxon of the Seeds (who was originally on the roster) was put on by the closing act, The Electric Prunes. They dressed the part of a psychedelic band and the Theramin was cool, but unlike Blues Magoos, they didn't sound like they play together every week. And they like it LOUD! Earplugs are always a good idea to have in your pocket at any music event.

The Twifties Show is Born!

Things are flowing along with some power and speed now! The Twifties Show is born. We filmed in the Yorktown last week, and have air dates for the next 2 weeks.

"The Twifties Show" is an entertainment and talk show shot in the Yorktown Cablevision studio in Westchester County, NY and on location in local spots. Twifties are the "fun people" in their late 40s, 50s, 60s, and up. "Twifties" stands for "people around their 50s who act like they're in their 20s."

The first show will air on Cablevision Public Access Channel 74 four times in Northern Westchester. Dates are Mondays May 25 and June 1 at 5:00 pm and Wednesday May 27 and June 3 at 10:00 pm.

In the first show Joanna Mosca appears and discusses her new album and how she discovered her talent for songwriting years after becoming a singer. Clips of Joanna's performances are shown. Belly dancers in their 60s and 70s, Robina and Fahdida of Westchester also appear. Viewers will notice them dancing silently, sans music. Ms. Teton calmly apologies and says "finding out at the last minute that you need permission from the artists to use their music is all part of the learning curve."

My Goal was to Reach a Deep State of Relaxation!

My sister doesn’t even know it yet, but after I finished my visit with her and her family this weekend, it was approaching dark, and being on my own with a 3 hour car ride ahead, I thought “how nice it would be to continue my idyll in the Pioneer Valley another night.” My husband was not at home, and I opened myself to the possibility of a relaxing overnight somewhere new, on the road, if the right opportunity arose.

Driving on the country roads instead of the highway, I eventually spotted a sign that said “Fine Country Dining” and followed it, thinking that it might be an inn with rooms to let. Indeed it was, almost in the middle of nowhere, but located at the exact high spot of its hill. Passing a huge replica of a milk bottle before finding the inn just seemed like a sign that a lighthearted Twifties adventure was at hand!

The Inn did have 4 rooms that they rented, and all were empty on this Saturday night, though the parking lot for the restaurant was as packed as opening day at the Red Sox or Yankees. I got one of the rooms, and found that there was both an outdoor porch over the front of the restaurant, and a little deck on top of the fire escape, right next to my room where I could stretch and watch the sunset.

My 24-hour runaway was devoted to rest, yoga and stretching on my own, good food, and sleep. I perused the menu of what it turns out has to be one of the best restaurants in Massachusetts. I went to my sunset porch and stretched, then took a little nap before having a late dinner.

I slept 'til 9 the next morning, then took my time, ambled downstairs for some coffee, sat outdoors on the rattan swinging loveseat, did some stretching and yoga outdoors, rested a little more, then had lunch in the dining room, and finally hit the road to come home. My TRA or Twenty-four Hour Run Away (TRA-La La!) was less than 24 hours, but left me deeply refreshed, and cost no more than a few co-pays for the doctor or pharmacy, which now I won’t need!
And the next day, back home, I am totally refreshed and re-energized.

Tips for your Twifties TRA

A destination 3 hours or less from home is ideal.

Driving farther doesn't mean a place is more relaxing.

Choose a place that is quiet and surrounded by nature.

Try to go alone.
That way you can have the luxury of being completely on your own time schedule. Being “scheduled” all the time is one of the greatest stressors of Twifties and is a new way of life.

Pack light.
Less stuff means less choices, less clutter, and more relaxation on your Run Away.

Leave the newspapers at home.
If your TRA is really about relaxing, think about leaving all the reading material at home, and bringing a meditation tape or relaxation music instead. And forget about TV. You want to rest and sleep and give your body what it needs on this trip!

Have your responsibilities at home covered so you won't spend valuable relaxation time fretting about them.

Bring a blanket from home or use the bath towel to spread on the floor for stretching.

Remind yourself that this is YOUR TIME for relaxing and release any guilt about it.

Stratton Mountain, and Manchester, VT

We snowboard and ski enthusiasts are counting the days ‘til we can boot up again. But there’s a way to get a head start on the good feelings that come from our favorite downhill sports.

Why not visit your favorite mountain off season and take the chair lift or gondola to the top? Last week I had the opportunity to ride the gondola to the top of Stratton Mountain, in Vermont. I have had many happy times snowboarding there, and while sitting at the summit looking out over the green valley ,with the blue sky above, those good-time feelings came flooding back to me, even without snow!

It was so interesting to see the topography of the mountain without its thick blanket of snow, and to see the trees with leaves dangling instead of icicles.

Being after Labor Day and before foliage season, we had the place to ourselves and that was a big change too, from the well-attended snowboard events I’ve covered at Stratton for my other website, SnowboardSecrets.com.

It is wonderfully refreshing, enlivening, and calming to breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the view from the top! Visiting the mountain even in “off” season makes you feel good, especially if it invokes good times you’ve had there in the past.

Of course if your favorite mountain is an airplane ride away instead of a car ride, this plan is not so easy. Maybe you can drive to a local mountain or hill that has a chairlift and dream your winter dreams!

Manchester, Vermont is a Great Town

If you’re in Southwestern Vermont near Stratton or Bromley or Route 7, don’t miss the Manchester Designer Outlets! Last week was my first visit, but not my last!

Manchester, Vermont is a charming well-groomed old New England town that also has some of the best shopping in the state. I visited two inns that I can’t wait to come back to for dinner and an overnight, The Reluctant Panther, and the Inn at Manchester. Both have tiny pocket drink bars tucked into living room areas of overstuffed sofas and very inviting bedrooms.

And I saw the most beautiful, tasteful looking designer outlet buildings that I’ve ever seen. A quick stride through Giorgio Armani and Escada assures me there is plenty there to revisit. Anichini is a lux linen and textile purveyor and I saw some colors of sheets and tapestry pillows that made my eyes pop and my mouth water. Anichini is a Vermont company, believe it or not.

Also mouth-watering was the delicious stuffed organic pepper we ate at Ponce Gourmet next door. The owners lovingly supervise every morsel. And the coffee is real free trade organic coffee where the buyers of the beans cultivate a beneficial relationship with the growers. My first sip of their iced coffee caused me to run inside and ask the owners all about the delicious robust blend.

The Manchester Designer Outlets was a fantastic wrap up to our weekend in Vermont.

It’s nice to take your time! Twifties need their relaxation.

I was getting ready for a road trip to visit my old dad out of state. I had been rushing around for days, and my body told me to slow down, even though I knew he was waiting patiently for my visit. I like to travel in the daylight, but I just needed to move slowly that day in my trip preparations.

Finally, I was ready and I hit the road. It was Labor Day weekend, but by the time I started driving, I found a wormhole with no traffic! Darkness fell during my drive, but I was pretty close to my destination by then. Gazing at the road straight ahead, suddenly I saw an explosion of pink and red colored stars in the sky far ahead, above the asphalt. Fireworks! I was treated to a 3 minute fireworks display directly ahead of me. My timing was perfect, after all.

I felt that the beautiful fireworks display that I passed at the exact right moment was a confirmation of my decision to move slowly instead of forcing my tired self to rush some more.

A few days later on the way back home, I also let the “flow” dictate my departure time and pace. Stopping the car for a quick rest and stretch, I heard thunder, and it led me to get out of the car to look at the sky. I gasped aloud as I found myself standing in the exact center of a perfect delicious rainbow. I could see almost the whole arc!

I arrived home and unpacked the car, and just as I closed the door of my house behind me, gentle rain began to fall. I was glad to be safe inside, finished with my trip.

Timing... excellent again!

If you have the luxury of not being on a tight schedule, it is so nice to take your time. If you don’t have the luxury, try to plan ahead for a little block of unscheduled time.

Trying Something New – The Benefits
Chairboarding on the SkySki (It’s like an Air Chair) Part Deux

When you try something new, you become like a child again. Most things are new to kids. That is why kids have “childlike wonder.” If you, as an adult, keep doing the same familiar things, your sense of childlike wonder will go dormant. If you're Twifty, you want to try new things to stay fresh.

For example, yesterday I got to try riding a the SkySki chairboard. It was a little scary, it was new, to me, and my child mind said to me “I’ve never done this before, I don’t know how.” But my adult mind overruled it and said “you can learn this, you just saw people do it, they survived, you have the skills, it’s not that hard, and the downside and chance of injury is relatively low.”

I tried it, and had good success! I am thrilled at how that success at something brand new yesterday has flowed over into every aspect of my life today! I feel strong and invincible and successful and full of childlike wonder!

Once You’ve Ridden the Halfpipe,
There’s not much in an Office or Boardroom that can Really Throw You

One of the most exciting sports experiences I’ve ever had was learning to ride the halfpipe in snowboarding. Riding the halfpipe is a relatively safe area of freestyle snowboarding. Snowboard instructor and author Chickie Rosenberg, who is a fabulous snowboard rider and an over-60 Twifty says that the halfpipe is “like a baby’s playpen” and as a beginner there’s just no way for you to fall out. Nonetheless, the first time you stand on your snowboard looking into the pipe and contemplating dropping in, it is a breathtakingly exciting prospect. Picture this, you’re on flat land, looking into a hollowed-out pipe in the snow, and getting ready to slide down the wall. Chickie Rosenberg says “the only scary part [of riding the halfpipe for the first time] is actually entering, sort of like going off a diving board as the surface drops from under you.”

In fact, it was a breathtaking experience for me for a couple of years. I have to say now it’s gotten kind of common for me, and in the last couple of seasons I’ve even found my mind able to have other thoughts while riding the pipe.

But the confidence that conquering the walls of the halfpipe gave me is immeasurable, and a real gift at this stage of my life. I’ve often said “once you’ve ridden the halfpipe, there’s not much in an office or boardroom that can really throw you.”

Yesterday I tried something kind of wild and new. I was with my Wednesdays Off crew on the lake, and after my wakeboard run I had a chance to ride a thing that doesn’t even have a generic name yet. But it’s a water ski with a chair on top and a hydrofoil on the bottom. The hydrofoil is like the one you might have seen Laird Hamilton ride under his surfboard in the awesome movie Riding Giants.

Two companies make this thing, that I know of, the brands are SkySki and Air Chair (Both great names btw and I should know cause I’m in the business of product naming in my other life. The name Air Chair rhymes and is easier for me to remember.)

The idea of the chairboard (let’s call it that) is that you can rise up and down like a merry go round horse on the hydrofoil, using the height that you hold the handle as the controller. Before you learn the up and down motion, you work on smoothly crossing the wake, back and forth. They tell me the chairboard crosses the wake like a hot knife through butter, but I wasn’t quite at that point yet. My friends do it, and even fly up in the air, landing jumps on the surface of the water smoothly. Amazing to watch!

But the point I want to make is that I tried a brand new sport that I had little background info on. I had seen 2 people ride it, both riding like champs. They made it look easy, so I tried riding it with the expectation that I could do it, and guess what! I had very good success from the first try!

On the other hand, my friend had seen these same 2 guys try to teach 15 people before me, on the thing, and most of them had not succeeded easily. She had a different experience set to make her judgment from, and her judgment was that it was hard to learn and would be hard for her.

By the way, I suspect the chairboard is a little easier for women to learn, because our center of gravity is right over the chair, whereas men’s is in their shoulders, making them top heavy.

Do you see how profoundly your expectations can influence your outcome?
Be aware and present when you think about your expectations. Expect the best! You deserve it! And when things go well for you, there is a pleasant ripple effect all around you!

Guitar Hero and Packing Cubes

Guitar Hero and Packing Cubes

Traveling gives us a chance to try new things. This week my travels allowed me to play Guitar Hero for the first time, and to use my beloved packing cubes inside my suitcase. Guitar Hero is a hoot and a half, and the packing cubes kept my goods neat and pulled together for travel.

Guitar Hero - you don't have to KNOW how to play the guitar to have fun!

Guitar Hero is a video game where you and your opponent wield toy Gibson guitars and compete for who can play the most correct notes in a song. I had seen it played by teenage boys before, but I hadn't previously noticed that you don't actually have to KNOW how to play the guitar to play this game. The 5 fret keys on the neck of the guitar are color-coded and you hit the guitar keys as the colored notes scroll toward you on a video pathway.

We played the song “Surrender" by Cheap Trick. Playing this game made me laugh out loud! After each round you receive instant gratification or mortification with a detailed point score breakdown, and your rock star avatar bows proudly or slinks offstage depending on how you did. Fun! Can't wait to play the new Aerosmith version they made for Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and 3, and Wii.
Guitar Hero was first released on the PlayStation 2 in November 2005, in case you've been wondering why you haven't played it yet.

Packing Cubes

I've been using my Eagle Creek Pack-It Cubes to organize my suitcases since my last trip to summer snowboard camp in the Alps. These soft-sided mesh topped zipper cubes are a fantastic way to keep your suitcase or duffle neat, pack plenty in, and best of all, find it.

Packing is almost fun now; just roll up your small clothing items and stuff them into a zippered mesh cube. Unpacking is a snap because you can just throw the neatly packed cubes into a drawer at your destination. Luggage inspection at the airport is a breeze too, because underwear or lingerie items won’t be dangling around in plain sight and your suitcase innards will look civilized. You can fit more in your suitcase too.

Other manufacturers make the cubes besides Eagle Creek, but I think Eagle Creek invented them and they have a large variety of shapes and colors and some patterns. Most importantly, their cubes have handles, so when you need a little bag to carry your book, sunscreen, and key to the pool on your trip, they’re really handy to use for that too.

Besides the cubes, the Eagle Creek Pack-It Folder is a miraculous way to compress a pile of neatly folded clothes so you can fit plenty of shirts and pants in your carry-on and have them arrive still spiffy. It looks like a large envelope and opens out flat. It comes with a folding board so you’ll be able to fold your clothes as neatly as those tees stacked at the Gap. Just stack your clothes, wrap up the edges like a square old-school diaper, overlap the Velcro, and you’re off!

Last night I was at a party with the expanded version of the Wednesdays Off Club and I can't tell you how impressed I was with these active Twifties. They ski or snowboard every Wednesday in the snow season. They also surf, bike, swim, dance, slalom water ski, heli ski, do yoga, and Zumba classes, a little skateboarding, wakeboarding, and certainly a few other things. They travel with a vengeance! They dine and they shop too. And they obviously take good care of themselves so they can enjoy life with a passion.

These people at the party were mostly over 50, and several over 60. Vibrant, fit, relaxed, cheerful, good looking fun happy people!!
Wow!
Even I didn't know groups of people like this exist. Twifties.com is about getting the message out to the general population and the marketing machine that we exist!

Most products are seemingly marketed to males 18 to 34 years old. This is proving to be a dated, worn, false marketing paradigm.
Twifties are not represented in ads. Fun products are not marketed to us.
We have money, time, and desire for recreation and fun.

Why Fun is Not a Joke

Hi there. I’ve been thinking about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. You might have studied that one in college, like I did. I have a rather bold theory. Here it is.

“Fun people” like us are at the top of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Yup. We’re even above the Self-Actualization step that used to be the pointy top of the pyramid when I studied it. Later the term “Peak Experience” was invented and interestingly it took the top of some newer versions of Maslow’s Hierarchy.

And lot’s of fun people do have Peak Experiences when doing the thing that is their passion. So hey, no mystery why we fun people are drawn to other fun people, we are happy people with fulfilled lives doing the things we most love!

Health
I am blessed with radiant health. It’s not an accident, I work at it, but it is good work, like gardening and weeding. I won’t get into my health regime here, but I do promise I will be talking about it. My F&F (friends and family) are kind of tired of hearing how great it’s worked for me, but you as readers can easily opt out of reading that part if you’re not into it, so I will be sharing it in my blog.

Anyway, I just wan t you to know that if you think your health could be better, it probably could, and it’s not that hard to achieve and improve your health if you make a few decisions.

What I wanted to tell you in this post is that my friend said my skin looked “glowing” today. And I have been eating large amounts of fresh greens from the local greenmarket for the last few weeks, Chard and kale and dandelion greens and mustard greens. Greeks call greens “Horta,” and many eat them daily. They are not something I crave. But that’s good, most things we crave are irritants, and we crave their sweet irritation.

So even though greens are not a food I dream of, I am eating them, and learning to like them. And it’s not that hard to learn to like something that makes you feel and look so good! My skin is glowing, I wore my bikini to the pool the other day and was proud of how I looked.
Hey, maybe eating kale’s not so bad!!

Recipes for Kale, from the Heart

Easy Cook Methods for Kale
If you’re not a regular kale eater, you’ll buy a bunch and look at it and say “what the heck should I do with this?” That’s what I was doing a few weeks ago. Here are a couple of ideas that worked for me.

Bake the Kale
Wash the kale, cut off the ends beyond the leaves, they’re tough, and discard, or put into soup stock,. Grease a cookie sheet with real olive oil, not any kind of spray. Dribble some olive oil on it or use a sprayer that you put your own good oil into, sprinkle with salt if desired. Bake at 350 or so. You can take it out when it’s soft, or crisp. Check after 10 minutes.

I haven’t quite figured out what to do with this crisp kale besides eat it like potato chips, and it’s not bad. Maybe spread it with hummus. Or put it on a sandwich with something moist like tomato.

Saute the Kale
You need a big pan, kale shrinks a lot when you cook it but is big to start with. Ideally a tall-sided large sauté pan.

Wash the kale, cut off the ends beyond the leaves and discard, or put into soup stock, they’re tough.

Chop one clove garlic (less or more to taste) coarsely. You can actually smash it with the side of a chef’s knife on a cutting board, then just slice it into 6 or 8 pieces like I do, it’s quick.

Pour olive oil into the pan so there is a thin layer (or more) covering the bottom of the pan. Heat it ‘til a leaf of kale thrown into it sizzles slightly.

Then throw the chopped garlic into the pan, stir it around for 30 - 60 seconds depending on if you like the taste of the garlic more raw or cooked.

Stuff the kale into the pot (sometimes the kale is bigger than the pot. If so just keep wilting the bottom layer in the pot then turning, and adding more.

The point is to get all the kale in the pot so you can cover it. If you don’t have the cover to the pot, see if another one will work, or use a plate.
Cover the kale. The kale has liquid in it that will come out and cause steam to cook the kale.

Reduce heat to medium, you shouldn’t hear sizzling.
Add salt if desired. I find these greens almost inedible without salt, it really helps.
Turn the kale every few minutes. Tongs are a great way to do this without making a mess.

Taste a leaf of the kale. The object here is to cook it until it’s tender enough to chew, but stop right at that point so it stays as bright green as possible. That is your job as kale chef, to walk the balancing tightrope of kale doneness. You will be proud when you acheive this, and you will have a delicious dish that is probably one of the healthiest things you can eat.

A friend of mine swears by a dash of blackstrap molasses for added flavor and nutrition. Onions, cooked. Or raw sweet onions would be good with kale. A little diluted cider vinegar and some Franks Hot Sauce or Goya Piquillo pepper liquid would be awesome. If you eat meat, some smoky pork in any form would be great cooked with the kale, but then simmer them longer so the flavors meld.

Sunset Cruise – you paddle

The Kayak meet-up group had an evening paddle and after-party at Long Island Sound tonight. Kayaks ranged from sleek smooth pointy fast boats with experienced owners to inflatables and inexpensive small “sit-on-tops” that fit right into the car. I was able to borrow a kayak and frankly the idea of owning one that rolls up and fits into the trunk and doesn’t take 2 people to load onto a car rack is appealing to me.

The less expensive kayaks are a little harder to move around, not cutting sleekly through the water like the fancy ones. But that was ok in my little sub-group. We paddled out halfway to the others, then spent some time bobbing around watching the sky turn pink down to the horizon and reflect incredibly beautiful patterns on the water as the moon rose.

The moon was almost full. We watched recreational fisherman on the rocks and in row-boats. They didn’t seem desperate to catch fish, just looking for an excuse to be on the water.

After the paddle, we were able to use the gas grill and deck at the Halloween Yacht Club, where one of the members keeps her kayak for $250 year. Everyone brought food and drink and we had a feast of grilled homemade chicken nuggets, sausages, chicken, vegetables, dips, chips, fruit, raw vegs, and cheese. Simple great Twifty times, open to all. Thanks Peter and Cynthia! Tomorrow night there’s a Moonlight Paddle leaving after dark.

“Vacation Close to Home” says the sign outside Playland Amusement Park in Rye, NY. This could be a Twifty motto. It’s not just about fuel prices, it’s an attitude that says you can enjoy leisure without packing your bags, even in the middle of the work week.

The annual Battle of the Bands brought us back to the park tonight. Four teenage bands playing and singing their hearts out to win a prize of $500 worth of recording time. What could be better on a perfect summer night than sitting outdoors watching kids do something they love, full of hope and passion for their music? The cost, a mere $5 for parking.

The lake cruise was a great way to catch a breeze as the small flat bottom boat toured us around the nature preserve next to the park. A few stationary painted animal statues surprised us around the bend. A live deer was spotted. 15 minutes of gentle relaxation. $4.

The park creator was a Twifty
Playland was America’s first planned amusement park, opened in 1928. The designer and manager of the park was a Twifty, back in 1927 when he designed it. They say Frank W. Darling was “an old amusement man, in experience, but not in years or enthusiasm.”

3.2 million people visited Playland in one year during the Depression. A mere 850,000 to 1 million people visit this charming beautiful Art Deco park (on the National Historic Register) annually now.

Slaves to Electronics? Take time to Think

It's Saturday and I’m headed to the local greenmarket and then the beach to see some Twifty friends and their kids in a surf competition. But a few thoughts before I depart.

About that Yoga book that I want to create with a theme of "do yoga and stretch anywhere and everywhere, using natural features as props." Just like skateboarders use steps and handrails anywhere to slide on, you can use these railings and picnic tables and airport floors to stretch on!!) It’s coming together in my mind. I'm so busy thinking about projects lately that I brushed me teeth with sunscreen, and put the new ecological dishwashing liquid I bought in the dishwasher. (It was meant for hand washing - if it didn't cause such a mess I could have almost enjoyed the rainbow streaked fluffy clouds of suds covering my kitchen floor. Why ISN'T there a bio-degradable dishwasher detergent in my store too?)

I do have a lot going on right now what with my new website Twiftes.com being created as we speak, my Fl exmeter Skate and Snowboard Wrist Guard and Glove internet business, my Name One! Product Naming business, and SnowboardSecrets.com website and other snowboard sites.

Oh yeah, and I am the US distributor for a giant airbag for snowboarders and skiers to land jumps in called Aerofreestyle Mat. I run all these businesses from my home, with one little computer and a 2 line phone. All by myself, with a part-time outside helper. And as you’ll read, I’m serious about taking time to relax and have fun! (if one can be “serious" about fun!)

How do I stay focused and keep my constant flow of crazy and sometimes terrific ideas flowing, you might wonder? I see people who can’t even focus on knowing where their keys are each day, let alone think of new ideas to try.

To be blunt, I think I have a lot more time to create than some people because I don’t fritter away my time on electronic devices. I carry 1 simple cell phone. No PDA, nothing with a keyboard or internet goes with me day to day. In my time off, my office calls are not forwarded to my cell. I don’t IM.

I watch very little tv. And I don’t walk around with earphones filling my head with music. Too much input blocks output. I also agree with Dr. Andrew Weill that we don’t have to spend a lot of time absorbing “news” each day.

Remember before we had all these wonderful instant communication devices, even back in the days before answering machines were invented? Remember how much slower life moved, and funny, how much better the economy was during most of that time? And how much more fit people were and how much healthier and less stressed we were?

How can we adapt the idea: to stop being slaves to portable communications devices that eat up our quality time?
When you spend non-work time answering messages from other people, you are taking that time away from yourself. And your friends and loved ones.

Portable electronic communications devices were created to save us time, I think. Instead they are time hogs. If I can run all these enterprises without taking electronics with me day to day, maybe you can too. And then you’ll have a lot more time to think, maybe even of some great ideas that can improve the world!

“Behave yourself or no electronics when we get home.”

The Wednesdays Off Club

Today I was with the happiest bunch of people I know. These Twifties take every Wednesday off from their work, and go out in their fast boats on a lake for wakeboarding, chair boarding, slalom water skiing, enjoying the breeze and taking a swim, and lunch with friends at a sunny dockside restaurant. In the winter they go skiing and snowboarding on Wednesdays. They work hard the rest of the week, but Wednesdays are enchanted. They are making the absolute best of their lives by enjoying it, and I salute them!

How can we use the inspiration of these Twifties and their happy lifestyle to help us make the best of our lives? Think about how you can fit a little more fun in your life.

Granted you may not have access to a fast boat on a lake, or even a lakeside restaurant. And you may not be able to take off a day from work every week. But could you take a day off once in a while for some rest and relaxation? Or could you take off an hour? Could you make your lunch break special by dining with a friend or two at a pretty place? That pretty place doesn’t have to be a restaurant. It could be a park where you take your sandwich from home. Twifties know how to make the best of their lives with the time and resources they have available.

Tire Changing Day – Making the best of it

Today I finally got around to tending to the tires on my car. OK, I’ll spill the beans. It’s July, and I finally got to taking the snow tires off. And I don’t live in Alaska.
But I was pleased to be able to turn this potentially dreary and expensive task into an afternoon of fun. How did I do it?

First, I expected the best for myself and set out to obtain it. I think it’s just as important to take care of myself as it is to take care of my automobile, and what better time to do it than when I was forced to take a car-fixing break from my routine?

I could have sat in the waiting room of my local Mavis Tire Shop for 2 hours inhaling the scent of fresh rubber tires and reading the newspapers and dog-eared magazines, and it would have been ok. Sometimes I just take the magazines outdoors and sit on the sunny step outside the shop, and read in the fresh air.

But my path today ended up being to take a walk. I started toward town on this hot day, and unexpectedly wonderful things happened. A brand new store along my way had a perfect little accessory for my house, both attractive and practical, at a wholesale price.

I called my husband to discuss it, and found he was driving through that same town I was in, on the way from an appointment. He came over and looked at the accessory, and liked it too, and we bought it and put it in his car.

Then I headed over to the Dunkin Donuts next to the tire shop, spotting a nicely shaded plot of grass under a tree where I planned to drink my iced tea. Inside the shop I struck up a conversation with the very Twifty woman behind me in line whose dress I admired. Turns out she is a local public relations firm owner and we may end up doing some business together. We chatted and I never did make it to the shady spot because my car got finished.

My afternoon of car repair turned out to be an unexpectedly pleasant time of serendipitous events. I was lucky, but I also went into it with a positive attitude. If I had expected drudgery and boredom, I’m sure I would have gotten that too!

I am incredibly excited about what’s happening! The concept that I have been mulling over for a year or so is coming to life! The concept is basically that I’m a fun grown-up, and I used to think I was one of a small bunch. But looking around, I see there are LOTS of fun grown-ups out there. We see each other in passing and give a little thumbs up to each other mentally as we pass.

But now it’s the time for we fun grown-ups to come out of the closet and have our moment! It’s time for us to declare our numbers, and our strength in the world and the marketplace. I’m a snowboarder over 40. I’ve found there are plenty of others like me. And we have buying power. Yet how come I’ve NEVER seen a snowboarder over 40 in any ad, EVER?

In fact, when you watch tv, the only time you see people our age is in ads for medications and erectile dysfunction, “Stairs who Cares?,” hair color, and financial planning. Geesh, you’d think people in their 40s, 50s, and 60’s (an older) never buy anything that’s not ill-health related, and never do anything fun. This image of us is just SO WRONG!!

I know there are people over 40 participating in every sport; even people in their 60’s and 70s + learning to surf. Part of the problem is that there is no name for this group of fun adults. We’re all lumped into a name that was coined in 1951 – The Baby Boom. This terrific name has such staying power that it has not been replaced and is still in use over 57 years later. By the way, it was created by the financial writer Sylvia Porter in 1951 in a fit of inspired and uncredited prescience and brilliance.

But the name “Baby Boomers” is part of the problem, part of the misconception. There were 78 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964 -a huge group of people, no doubt! However we are not homogenous. Some of this group has become their own stodgy parents. And some of us are still enjoying life with a passion.

Sooo, my big project is to bring to light the fact that there is a huge subset or group of people over 40, probably over 30 million of us, who still like and want and need and know how to have fun! And my project is to let us FUN people have a place of our own to get together on the internet, and share what is working for us in our wonderful lives. And to share a bit of relief in a challenging world.

I have given a fun new name to this group. Twifties. For “people around their 50’s who act like they are around their 20’s.” My vision is that this is like “Facebook for Grown-Ups.” Face it, there’s no place like this so far on the internet for us to get together now. People are searching and reaching for ways to feel a little better in these days of many challenges. “Spend 2 minutes at Twifties.com, and… you’ll…Feel… BETTER!”

Twifties.com will be a place where you can post a profile of yourself with some pictures (to show how great you’re taking care of yourself.) You can answer our questionnaire and tell what’s working for you and keeping you inspired and happy. Or you can put your favorite fun passion and zip code into a search box on the site, and find other Twifties who share your passions, in your geographical area to share activities with. And read what works for and inspires them!

Also, as you have gained experience in life, you have probably gotten quite good at a few things. Twifties Tips is a way for you to share your knowledge. You can share your expertise as tips with readers for free, or you can make a little cash-flow by putting your tips up for sale on our site. You write-em, we distribute them, we split the proceeds with 60% to you, the writer.

You probably have other upbeat thoughts to share, and you can do it easily on your Twifties.com blog.
This all feels so right and natural to me, and things are falling into place now perfectly. August is when we are planning to unveil the site.
